Pine Bluffs, Wyoming

Pine Bluffs is a town in eastern Laramie County, Wyoming, United States. It is located on the county's border with Nebraska. It is part of the Cheyenne, Wyoming, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,129 at the 2010 census.[6] It was first known as Rock Ranch, but the name was changed by railroad officials for the pines on the nearby bluffs.

In 1868 Pine Bluffs consisted of a tent, a slab shack with a stone chimney, and a square shed of canvas-covered poles. Cattle herds moved up the Texas Trail which ran through Pine Bluffs and became the largest cattle shipping point on the Union Pacific Railroad around 1884. In 1898, C.W. Johnson opened up one of Pine Bluffs' oldest stores. It was a proven success from the beginning, and remained open until the latter half of the 20th century. By the early 1900s Pine Bluffs was known as the best lighted city of its size in the entire United States. The Pine Bluffs Lighting Company was organized in September 1909. This company used gas produced by a new process, giving the light more brilliance.

Along with a growing town economy, agricultural endeavors were also booming around Pine Bluffs. In 1909 the local farmers got a chance to show off their hard work and dedication to the land. A unique but successful fair called the "Harvest Festival" was put on to showcase the vegetable and dry-farming section variety in the town. The main feature of the fair was the Grain Palace. Built entirely of different grain crops, this magnificent building covered 24 by 36 feet (7.3 by 11.0 m) and 14 feet (4.3 m) to the eaves. The Grain Palace was filled with exhibits of area artwork made from home-grown products.

Teton Village, Wyoming

Teton Village is a census-designated place (CDP) in Teton County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 330 at the 2010 census. The village surrounds the base of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. It is accessed from nearby Jackson, Wyoming and the surrounding area via the Moose-Wilson Road (Wyoming highway 390).

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 175 people, 88 households, and 44 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 34.9 people per square mile (13.5/km²). There were 396 housing units at an average density of 79.1/sq mi (30.5/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 98.86% Euro American and 1.14% Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.71% of the population.

There were 88 households out of which 15.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% were married couples living together, 4.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 50.0% were non-families. 36.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.99 and the average family size was 2.68.

Pinedale, Wyoming

Pinedale is a town in and the county seat of Sublette County, Wyoming, United States.[6] The population was 2,030 at the 2010 census. Pinedale is an important hunting outfitting town and a gateway to the Wind River Mountains. It is also a major gateway to the Jackson Hole area in Wyoming. Pinedale is also near several large natural gas fields, including the Pinedale Anticline and Jonah Field. Attractions include the Museum of the Mountain Man, Green River Rendezvous Days, White Pine Ski Area, and the Town Park System along the Pine Creek Corridor in the middle of town. The mayor is Matt Murdock, who was elected in 2018.[7]

Pinedale is located at 42°51′58″N 109°51′53″W / 42.86611°N 109.86472°W / 42.86611; -109.86472 (42.866162, −109.864622)[8] and sits at an elevation of 7,175 feet above sea level. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.15 square miles (5.57 km2), all of it land.[1]

Primarily due to its high elevation, Pinedale has a subalpine climate (Köppen Dfc) with summers featuring very warm afternoons and cold mornings, plus very cold, dry winters. The average January low is −0.1 °F (−17.8 °C), on average 53.2 mornings fall to or below 0 °F or −17.8 °C and between 1971 and 2000 −20 °F or −28.9 °C was reached on an average of seven mornings each winter. The coldest temperature on record since records started in 1948 is −49 °F (−45 °C) during the bitter cold wave of December 1990.

Thermopolis, Wyoming

"Thermopolis" (/θɜːrˈmɒpəlɪs/) is from the Greek for "Hot City". It is home to numerous natural hot springs, in which mineral-laden waters are heated by geothermal processes. The town is named for the hot springs located there.[7]

The town claims the world's largest mineral hot spring, appropriately named "The Big Spring", as part of Wyoming's Hot Springs State Park. The springs are open to the public for free as part of an 1896 treaty signed with the Shoshone and Arapaho Indian tribes.

Thermopolis is located near the northern end of the Wind River Canyon and Wedding of the Waters, where the north-flowing Wind River becomes the Bighorn River. Thermopolis is ringed by mountains, with the Big Horn Mountains to the northeast, the Bridger Mountains to the southeast, the Owl Creek Mountains to the southwest and the Absaroka Range to the northwest. Thermopolis is the southern-most municipality in the Big Horn Basin.

Powell, Wyoming

In 2013, the area was the subject of a piece of national legislation. The Powell Shooting Range Land Conveyance Act (S. 130; 113th Congress), which was passed by both the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives, would transfer a piece of land from the Bureau of Land Management to the Powell Recreation District for continued use as a shooting range.[9][10]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 6,314 people, 2,463 households, and 1,449 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,485.6 inhabitants per square mile (573.6/km2). There were 2,627 housing units at an average density of 618.1 per square mile (238.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 93.7% White, 0.4% African American, 0.6% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 2.4% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.4% of the population.

There were 2,463 households of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.9% had a male householder with no wife present, and 41.2% were non-families. 33.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.93.

Torrington, Wyoming

It is the home of Eastern Wyoming College, and is the surrounding region's center of commercial activity. Within this primarily agricultural community, there are several fertilizer plants, a sugar beet factory, and numerous tourist facilities and retail businesses that serve the local and nearby rural populations.[7]

Situated on the historic Mormon Trail and near the Oregon and California trails[8] along the banks of the North Platte River, Torrington was founded in 1900 by W.G. Curtis (1857–1913), and named by him for his home town of Torrington, Connecticut. Originally a watering and coaling station for the CB&Q Railroad, which began passenger service in 1900, the growing city soon became the main source of civilization for nearby farmers and ranchers. In 1905, the first bridge was constructed over the North Platte River, which it had previously been necessary to ford.[9]

A post office called Torrington was established in 1889 on W. G. Curtis' farm three miles west of where the town of Torrington would be in 1900, with W. G. Curtis serving as Postmaster and later as mayor. By 1908 the town was incorporated as a town in Laramie County. It had a bank, three general stores, a pharmacy with a soda fountain, a land office, and two hotels (for one of which the building, although modified, still exists at 1841 Main Street.)[9] It soon became a central place of trade for Goshen County, and for surrounding areas in eastern Wyoming and western Nebraska.[9]

Ranchester, Wyoming

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 855 people, 312 households, and 236 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,401.6 inhabitants per square mile (541.2/km2). There were 332 housing units at an average density of 544.3 per square mile (210.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 90.3% White, 7.3% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 1.1% from other races, and 0.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.6% of the population.

There were 312 households of which 42.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.8% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.1% had a male householder with no wife present, and 24.4% were non-families. 17.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.09.

The median age in the town was 31.7 years. 32.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.3% were from 25 to 44; 23.6% were from 45 to 64; and 11.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 50.5% male and 49.5% female.

Upton, Wyoming

Upton is located at 44°6′12″N 104°37′33″W / 44.10333°N 104.62583°W / 44.10333; -104.62583 (44.103354, -104.625943).[7] According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.96 square miles (7.67 km2), all of it land.[1]

As of the 2010 United States Census[2] of 2010, there were 1,100 people, 467 households, and 303 families residing in the town. The population density was 371.6 inhabitants per square mile (143.5/km2). There were 539 housing units at an average density of 182.1 per square mile (70.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.6% White, 0.2% African American, 1.7% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.

There were 467 households of which 29.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.2% were married couples living together, 5.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 35.1% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.88.

Rawlins, Wyoming

Rawlins is a city in Carbon County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 9,259 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Carbon County.[6] It was named for Union General John Aaron Rawlins, who camped in the locality in 1867.[7]

As of the census of 2010, there were 9,259 people, 3,443 households, and 2,206 families residing in the city.[2] The population density was 1,123.7 inhabitants per square mile (433.9/km2). There were 3,960 housing units at an average density of 480.6 per square mile (185.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 84.7% White, 1.1% African American, 1.3% Native American, 1.0% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 9.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 24.3% of the population.

There were 3,443 households of which 35.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 35.9% were non-families. 29.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.04.

Wapiti Ranger Station

Wapiti Ranger Station is the oldest United States Forest Service ranger station in the United States.[3] The station is located in Shoshone National Forest, Wyoming, and has been used continuously since it was built in 1903. The station was the first forest service ranger station built with federal funding. Constructed with native forest timber, the structure is maintained regularly, with some recent improvements – such as replacing some rotting timber – implemented in 2005.

A location called Wapiti Station is featured in the 2016 game Firewatch, which is set in the Shoshone National Forest. However, its depiction and location within the forest do not resemble Wapiti Ranger Station.
