Vaughnsville, Ohio

Vaughnsville (pronounced VAWNZ-vil) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in southern Sugar Creek Township, Putnam County, Ohio, United States. Although it is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 45893.[3] It lies along State Route 115 at its intersection with State Routes 12 and 189. Sugar Creek flows along the west and south of Vaughnsville.

Vaughnsville was originally called Monterey, and under the latter name was laid out in 1847.[4] An addition was made by Daniel C. Vaughn, who gave the town his name.[5] A post office called Vaughnsville has been in operation since 1848.[6]

Vaughnsville's most unusual claim to fame is the first location in the World to use individual communion cups for the Lord's Supper. Though contested.[7] John G. Thomas—a physician and pastor of the Vaughnsville Congregational Church—designed a communion outfit after noticing “a communicant with a diseased mouth condition”.[8] Thomas applied for a patent for his invention on August 2, 1893, in which he wrote that he “invented certain new and useful improvements in communion service” which would “provide an individual or separate cup for the use of each person at the celebration of the Lord’s Supper, commonly called the communion service…” (Serial No. 482,186). According to The Lima News, Thomas and his church elders first experimented with the individual cups “sometime during 1893” (January 16, 1955, p. 5B). The patent for his invention was granted on March 6, 1894, and marked the first time an individual cup service received letters patent in the United States (Patent No. 516,065). Thomas moved to Lima and started the Thomas Communion Service Company in 1893 and it was sold in 1972.

Waverly, Ohio

Waverly (also Waverly City) is a village in, and the county seat of, Pike County, Ohio, United States.[4] The population was 4,408 at the 2010 census. The town was formed in 1829, as the construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal along the west bank of the Scioto River brought new growth to the area. In 1861 the county seat was moved here from Piketon.

Historians believe that Waverly and the surrounding areas were inhabited by nomadic people as early as 13,000 BC.[5] The first historical evidence that can be tied to a particular culture dates back to sometime between the years 1,000 and 800 BC, to the culture known as the "Adena". The area around Waverly is particularly rich in Adena heritage, including a number of mounds throughout the area. The Adena took their name from Thomas Worthington's Adena Estate near Chillicothe, where evidence of their culture was found in the early 1900s.

There is evidence pointing to the emergence of the "Hopewell" culture in the Waverly area beginning about 300 BC. The namesake for the Hopewell is Captain M. C. Hopewell, the owner of the Ross County farmstead where artifacts leading to the discovery of the Hopewell's separate cultural identity were found.[5] Both the Adena and the Hopewell are well known for their mounds, many of which still exist around southern Ohio, including several in Pike County, and just north of Waverly in Chillicothe, Ohio, where the Adena Mound is a registered historic structure. There is evidence of Hopewell in the area until about 600 A.D. It is unknown what caused the demise of the Hopewell, and there is not much information available about the people immediately following them. Sometime after 1,000 A.D., the "Fort Ancient" people began to occupy southern Ohio, only to disappear in the 17th century, likely decimated by infectious diseases spread in epidemics from early European contact. Some scholars believe that the Fort Ancient people "were ancestors of the historic Shawnee people, or that, at the very least, the historic Shawnees absorbed remnants of these older peoples."[5]

West Rushville, Ohio

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 134 people, 51 households, and 38 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,914.3 inhabitants per square mile (739.1/km2). There were 62 housing units at an average density of 885.7 per square mile (342.0/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.0% White and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.

There were 51 households of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% were married couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 9.8% had a male householder with no wife present, and 25.5% were non-families. 21.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.00.

The median age in the village was 36 years. 29.1% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 28.4% were from 25 to 44; 24.7% were from 45 to 64; and 9% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the village was 50.7% male and 49.3% female.

Willoughby, Ohio

Willoughby's first permanent settler was David Abbott in 1798, who operated a gristmill.[7] Abbott and his family had close relations to the local tribe of Erie Indians along the banks of the river the Indians called the "Sha-ga-rin" or Clear Water. This river was later called the Chagrin River, though the derivation of the name remains in dispute.

In 1835, the village was permanently named "Willoughby" in honor of Dr. Westel Willoughby, Jr., a public health official that the founders of a short-lived Medical College, which was based in the city, hoped to attract to the area. Many historical buildings from this period survive to this date, affording the downtown Willoughby area some outstanding specimens of 19th century architecture.

Over time, Willoughby sent citizens into every major U.S. military conflict. Several memorials and historical relics are displayed in Wes Point Park, the center of downtown Willoughby, to honor those that have served.

Vermilion, Ohio

Vermilion is a city in Erie and Lorain counties in the U.S. state of Ohio, on Lake Erie. The population was 10,594 at the 2010 census.[4] The current mayor is Jim Forthofer. The Lorain County portion of Vermilion is part of the Cleveland–Elyria–Mentor Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the Erie County portion is part of the Sandusky Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Vermilion was initially settled in the early 19th century and incorporated as a village in 1837.[5] The city took its name from the nearby Vermilion River.[6] It developed as a fishing and small boat harbor. In 1847 the Congress of the United States built the Vermilion Lighthouse to aid navigation on Lake Erie.

As commerce grew in larger nearby cities, the Vermilion River proved inadequate to large commercial traffic. Later, recreational boating became very popular. During the early 20th century the area became known as a resort community, featuring many beaches and cottages. Most structures were eventually converted to year-round use; many still are used as summer homes or vacation houses. Linwood Park in Vermilion is a good example.

Wayland, Ohio

Wayland is an unincorporated community in western Paris Township, Portage County, Ohio, United States. It is located at latitude 41.161 and longitude -81.071, with an elevation of 948 feet.[1] Although it is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 44285.[2] The community is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area.

For a period of time in the nineteenth century, when it was a stop on the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal, Wayland was called "Cyclone." However, the name was changed, as it reminded people of a tornado.[3] The community is nicknamed Cyclone, Newport and Parisville.[1]

West Salem, Ohio

West Salem is a village in Wayne County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,464 at the 2010 census. West Salem is served by a branch of the Wayne County Public Library.[4] The noted drag racing track Dragway 42 is located nearby.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 1,464 people, 558 households, and 393 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,343.1 inhabitants per square mile (518.6/km2). There were 620 housing units at an average density of 568.8 per square mile (219.6/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.8% White, 0.1% African American, 0.1% Native American, 1.0% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.1% of the population.

There were 558 households of which 38.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.0% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 8.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 29.6% were non-families. 23.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.00.

The Wind in the Willows

The Wind in the Willows is a children's novel by Kenneth Grahame, first published in 1908. Alternately slow-moving and fast-paced, it focuses on four anthropomorphised animals in a pastoral version of Edwardian England. The novel is notable for its mixture of mysticism, adventure, morality and camaraderie, and celebrated for its evocation of the nature of the Thames Valley.

In 1908, Grahame retired from his position as secretary of the Bank of England. He moved back to Berkshire, where he had lived as a child, and spent his time by the River Thames doing much as the animal characters in his book do – as the book says, "simply messing about in boats" – and expanding the bedtime stories he had earlier told his son Alastair into a manuscript for the book.

The novel was in its 31st printing when playwright A. A. Milne adapted part of it for the stage as Toad of Toad Hall in 1929. 1946 saw the first of several film adaptions. In 2003, The Wind in the Willows was listed at number 16 in the BBC's survey The Big Read.[1] More than a century after its original publication, it was adapted again for the stage in 2016 musical by Julian Fellowes.

Versailles, Ohio

Versailles (/vərˈseɪlz/ vər-SAYLZ) is a village in Darke County, Ohio, United States. It is the only village in Wayne Township. The population was 2,687 at the 2010 census. The proper local pronunciation of the name is ver-sales, with the accent on the second syllable, unlike the French city of the same name.[5][6]

Founded in 1819,[7] the village is named after the city of Versailles in France. Versailles was originally named Jacksonville.[8] However, as a large number of early residents were of French descent, it was suggested that the village's name be changed to "Versailles" in memory of their homeland. Versailles became the new name of the village in 1837.

Versailles is located at 40°13′23″N 84°29′06″W / 40.222964°N 84.485077°W / 40.222964; -84.485077.[9] According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.88 square miles (4.87 km2), of which 1.87 square miles (4.84 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.[2]
